Wedding Dress Styles for Every Body Type

How to Find Your Most Flattering Silhouette

If you've already started shopping for your wedding dress, you've probably seen tons of advice about what you should wear based on your body type.

But most of those so-called rules aren’t really rules at all.

At Bridal House of Nashville, we believe you should wear the dress that makes you feel your most beautiful. Whether that’s a ballgown, a fitted mermaid, a simple sheath, or something completely unexpected, I'm here for it.

That said, knowing how different silhouettes, necklines, and proportions work can help you narrow down your choices. If you want to create a certain shape or highlight a favorite feature, we can use the dress to do that.

Think of the suggestions below as a starting point, not strict rules about what you can or can’t wear.

Classic Wedding Dress Silhouettes

Before we get into body types, it helps to know what we mean when we say “silhouette.” A wedding dress silhouette is the overall shape of the gown on your body.

A-line: Fitted through the bodice and gradually widens through the skirt.

Ballgown: A fitted bodice paired with a dramatically full skirt.

Mermaid: Fitted through the bodice, waist, and hips before flaring out below the knee.

Trumpet: Similar to a mermaid, but the skirt begins flaring a little higher.

Sheath/Column: A straighter, streamlined silhouette that follows the body's natural shape.

These aren't rules about which dresses you can wear. They're simply useful starting points when you're trying to figure out what you like.

Want to Create an Hourglass Silhouette?

Many brides tell me they love the idea of that classic hourglass shape in their wedding gown.

If that's the look you're after, we can play with proportion and waist definition to create it.

A defined waist and a fuller skirt can create beautiful contrast, while a fitted gown can show off your natural curves. Details like necklines, belts, seams, and where the skirt sits can all change how a dress looks on you.

But here's the important part: you don't need to have an hourglass figure to wear a gown that creates one.

The right dress can really help.

And if you don’t want an hourglass shape at all, that’s perfectly fine too.

If You Have a Fuller Bust

Having a fuller bust doesn't mean you have to avoid certain necklines.

Yes, even a plunging neckline.

We simply want to make sure the gown is built to support you, so you feel secure and comfortable all day.

A well-made dress can give you the support you need without sacrificing the look you love. If you want a dramatic neckline, let’s find one that works for you rather than assuming you have to rule it out.

Remember, your wedding dress should fit your body, not the other way around.

If You're Petite

Being petite doesn't mean you need to stick to a certain type of wedding dress.

It just means we’ll pay attention to proportion so the dress doesn’t overwhelm your frame.

The right silhouette, waist placement, fabric, and details can make a big difference. I’ve seen petite brides fall in love with dresses they never would have considered after reading a typical “body type” chart.

That’s why I don’t think you should make decisions based on rules before you’ve tried the dress on.

Sometimes, the dress you least expect ends up being the one that looks amazing.

If You're Curvy

First, please don't assume that being curvy limits your options.

It doesn't.

At Bridal House of Nashville, we carry an extensive selection of gowns for curvier brides because I want you to be able to actually try on dresses and see what you love, not stand in a store looking at a rack of samples and wondering what something might look like on you. Our current sample collection includes sizes 6 through 24, with dedicated curvy styles as well.

You can wear something fitted, something flowing, lace, a plunging neckline, sleeves, or anything else that makes you feel beautiful. Being curvy doesn’t mean you have a limited list of dresses you’re “allowed” to wear.

Our goal is to help you find the dress that makes you feel confident.

Wedding Dress Sizing: Don't Get Hung Up on the Number on the Tag

Bridal sizing can be confusing, and the number on the tag doesn’t measure your beauty.

Don’t stress about the number. Focus on how you feel in the dress.

Each designer uses their own size chart for wedding gowns, so we take your measurements and help choose the size that fits you best.

I know it’s easy to focus on the number on the tag, especially if it’s different from what you usually see in your everyday clothes.

Try not to let it bother you.

What matters most is how you feel when you wear the dress.

Choosing a Wedding Dress: Consider More Than Your Body Type

There’s another important factor that sometimes gets overlooked when choosing a wedding dress: the wedding itself.

  • Where are you getting married?

  • What will the setting look like?

  • How do you want to feel when you walk into the room?

If you’re getting married in a massive cathedral and want to make an entrance, you might choose a dramatic train or a full skirt.

Getting married in an elegant ballroom? A glamorous gown with embellishments might feel right at home.

Planning a wedding on a grassy farm? You may want something lighter and easier to move in.

Having a destination wedding? We'll also think about how you're getting that gown there.

Your dress doesn't exist in a vacuum. It should feel like it belongs with you, your wedding, and the setting you've chosen.

Don't Let Trends Decide What You Wear

Wedding dress trends can be fun. I love seeing what's new and watching bridal fashion evolve.

But you don't have to follow them.

And you don't have to avoid them, either.

If you love a timeless, classic gown, wear it.

If you fall in love with a dramatic modern design, wear it.

If your dream dress looks like something your grandmother could have worn, that's wonderful.

Your wedding photos will be around long after that trend has come and gone. Choose the dress you genuinely love, not the one you think you're supposed to love.

The Best Wedding Dress Is the One That Makes You Feel Like Yourself

At the end of the day, I can make suggestions based on your proportions, venue, timeline, style, and what you’ve told me you want.

But you get the final say.

No silhouette is off-limits. No body type needs to be hidden. And there is no single definition of what a beautiful bride should look like.

Maybe you want to highlight your waist or show off your curves. Maybe you've always dreamed of sleeves, a plunging neckline, or layers of tulle. Or maybe you want something simple and elegant that feels exactly like you.

That's what we're here to help you find.

So come to your appointment relaxed. Bring your ideas, your questions, and an open mind. Try the dress you think you'll love. Then try the one you never would have picked for yourself.

We'll listen, make suggestions, and solve the little problems along the way. And when you look in the mirror and light up, we'll know we've found it.

Because that's what we're looking for.

Not the dress that follows all the rules.

Your dress.
